Davallia trichomanoides, also known as black rabbit's foot fern, is a fern in the family Davalliaceae which is found in Malaysia. Its height is from 15 to 45 cm. Partial or full shade is required for the growth of it. It can survive in dryness.

Davallia (deersfoot fern, hare's foot fern, shinobu fern, rabbit foot fern, ball fern) is a genus of about 40 species of fern. In the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016 (PPG I), it is the only genus in the family Davalliaceae, which is placed in the suborder Polypodiineae, order Polypodiales. Alternatively, the family may be placed in a very broadly defined family Polypodiaceae sensu lato as the subfamily Davallioideae.

The family is sister to the largest family of ferns, Polypodiaceae, and shares some morphological characters with it. Species are epiphytic ferns, with fronds arising from long aerial rhizomes which grow on and over thick bark on trees or on rock crevices.

    Black Rabbit's foot

Posted by Brandon Dishman on Aug 18th 2020

I purchased this fern, and it arrived quickly and appearing healthy. However, (all) of the rhizomes were buried in soil. To my eye, it looked like a small plug that had been rapidly transferred to a 4" pot. The plant was sitting quite crookedly, so some of the rhizomes were easy to uncover, while those at the lower side took more work and were buried in 1.5" of soil. Point being, had I not known how to care for this plant already, and just watered it, it would have died. The rhizomes cannot be buried on this plant, they will rot. I know it wasn't just tossed around in shipping, because the pot it shipped in had been wrapped in plastic wrap, and all of the soil was well-protected from escaping. This pot was filled right to the very top with soil, which was sealed in very well. even though the plant was tightly sitting at a lower point of the pot. However, I would buy from this seller again, and the other plant I received in this shipment was not treated in this way. So to summarize, very prompt shipping, plants arrived safely, foliage is healthy. The rhizomes on the Rabbit's foot that I had to unearth do seem like they were affected, but I think she'll live. My other fern from this order seems to be doing great. I tried to be as fair in this review as possible.
